About the speaker:
Born a monolingual American, Sara Maria struggled with high school Spanish. She now speaks Spanish, French, Mandarin, American Sign Language, Nicaraguan Sign Language, and Korean, and can get by in Russian, Arabic, Vietnamese, Thai, Cantonese, and Indonesian. After freelancing as a translator and interpreter (including simultaneous interpretation at the United Nations and the translations of two published books) she started Meridian Linguistics, a linguistics consulting firm employing over 2,000 freelance translators and serving companies like The Economist and Airbnb. Sara Maria received her BA in Psycholinguistics at Columbia University, and was a PhD candidate at New York University before leaving to start her own company.
