  a monolingual American\, Sara Maria struggled with high school Spanish. S
 he now speaks Spanish\, French\, Mandarin\, American Sign Language\, Nicar
 aguan Sign Language\, and Korean\, and can get by in Russian\, Arabic\, Vi
 etnamese\, Thai\, Cantonese\, and Indonesian. After freelancing as a trans
 lator and interpreter (including simultaneous interpretation at the United
  Nations and the translations of two published books) she started Meridian
  Linguistics\, a linguistics consulting firm employing over 2\,000 freelan
 ce translators and serving companies like The Economist and Airbnb. Sara M
 aria received her BA in Psycholinguistics at Columbia University\, and was
  a PhD candidate at New York University before leaving to start her own co
