Science leads to understanding. But humans sometime mess it up!
We all practice data science every day. Throughout the day we make observations, collect information, and process and analyze that information in order to make the best decisions for ourselves. At a larger scale, researchers and data scientists do the same thing, with the goal to explain phenomena and realities at various scales. We read about polls, surveys and studies that seek to explain our world. However, just as we periodically make mistakes in how we
collect or interpret information in our everyday observations, the same thing occurs among scientists who do the research, as well as consumers who learn about the research. In this skills workshop, we will examine how data and science contributes to our understanding of the world,t he limits of data science, how to be “literate” consumers of science, and how to be effective data collectors and analyzers in our respective pursuits.
What You Will Learn:
- Skills to consume data science (e.g., science reported by journalists, social media, etc.)
- Skills to effectively interpret and recognize the limits of data science (e.g., analytics, surveys)
- Knowledge about the role of science in society while recognizing its limits to explain phenomena
Skill Level: Beginner (up to Intermediate)
